Exploring the Determinants of School Bus Crash Severity

Although the school bus is considered a safe form of transportation, crashes are major safety concern. School result driver error either at-fault or another vehicle (where not at fault). To examine risk factors associated with related and crash outcomes, this study segments develops two binary logit models for each type. A total 1702 recorded between 2009 2016 were used to estimate model. According model results, sideswipe collisions less likely in injury outcomes buses than rear-end side-impact collisions. Speeding, driving impaired under influence, negotiating curve all have significant positive associations not-at-fault crashes. This study’s practical implications include enforcing guidelines, training programs drivers that elements nonroutine trips, crossing guards, awareness other vehicles instill practices around buses.
